Jesus’ demise was that of a martyr and a prophet.  I’ve identified no less than two martyrs in my life:  One a pupil—Sister Dorothy Stang who grew to become a trainer to me; and one other a trainer, monk, author—Thomas Merton with whom I had a correspondence.  Each of them had been individuals absolutely alive, absolutely conscious, absolutely in love with life regardless of its many and dangerous struggles.  Each lived from their conscience and appear to us to have died prematurely.

Jesus reminds us to “rejoice and be glad when individuals abuse you and prosecute you on my account….That is how they persecuted the prophets earlier than you.”  (Mt 5.10-12)  Dwelling love and preaching it carry their value irrespective of how demise involves us.
