TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN, IRELAND: 

There’s a room within the library—stored dim—the place our eyes should modify to shadows. Image a line of individuals ready in raincoats. College students with backpacks. Yours really, an umbrella hooked over my arm.

One after the other, every customer bows over the see-through case. It holds a masterpiece: one of many gospels written by hand, a part of the matchless, medieval E-book of Kells.

Think about monks hunching over the vellum: pin-pricking tips, for textual content; lettering verses with iron-gall ink; illuminating pages with expensive pigments and gold leaf—nonetheless vibrant centuries later. 

Bend over the ebook with me. Ahh. Your doubletake, my indrawn breath lest I fog the glass. Let all the things else fall away besides . . .
